Octane: another “fast React” without Virtual DOM or strict hook rules ⚡️
Octane offers a React-like API without Virtual DOM or hook restrictions, with ports of popular ecosystem tools.

An interesting rendering library called Octane has appeared. It aims to solve React’s perennial problems (Virtual DOM overhead and strict Rules of Hooks) while preserving the familiar DX.
What’s under the hood, and what makes it interesting:
- No Virtual DOM: Octane renders and updates the DOM precisely where needed, avoiding unnecessary computation and expensive tree comparisons.
- No hook rules: Forget restrictions on calling hooks inside conditions, loops or nested functions. Reactivity works more flexibly.
- Familiar API: Its syntax and concepts are as close to React as possible, so the learning curve is minimal and the code looks almost identical.
- An ecosystem out of the box: The developers didn’t just release a renderer. They also shipped ports of popular tools: Zustand, TanStack Router/Query, Three.js, Tauri and more.
It’s telling how React has become such an absolute industry standard that new libraries no longer try to invent their own conceptual syntax (as Vue and Svelte once did). Instead, they prefer to mimic React’s API while changing only the engine underneath.
Have you tried switching to React-compatible alternatives (Preact, Million.js, etc.) for performance, where simply changing aliases in your bundler configuration is enough? What pitfalls have you encountered in real production projects?
