IPv8: a new internet?
The IPv8 draft proposes extending IPv4 with an ASN prefix: address structure, deployment ideas and other changes.

An IPv8 draft has appeared at the IETF, and on paper it looks like a dream.
In short, the authors propose simply adding more blocks to IPv4. Why nobody thought of this earlier is a good question.
The structure looks like this:
r.r.r.r.n.n.n.n
r.r.r.r — 32-bit ASN роутинг-префикс
n.n.n.n — 32-bit адрес хоста (по сути тот же IPv4)
So what used to be:
192.168.0.1 → becomes something like 10.20.30.40.192.168.0.1
No hexadecimal magic or :: like in IPv6.
The idea is that IPv4 becomes a subset of IPv8, so deployment should be less painful than with IPv6.
But we have already seen how “should be” works in practice: IPv6 is still being rolled out decades later 🙂
The draft also includes other changes:
- cryptography
- authentication
- more flexible addressing
Networking is not really my strong suit, so for the details it is better to head straight to the original source 👇
