React code on top of Zed’s GPU UI: meet GPUIX ⚡️

GPUIX lets you write React interfaces for Zed’s GPU-accelerated GPUI without Electron or Chromium.

React code on top of Zed’s GPU UI: meet GPUIX ⚡️

The developers of the Zed editor wrote their own GPU-accelerated UI framework, GPUI, in Rust to achieve maximum performance and an instantly responsive interface.

The community has gone further and released GPUIX, a library that lets you render familiar React code directly on top of that framework!

What makes it special, and why it’s cool:

  • Familiar DX: You write ordinary React code in JSX/TSX using the familiar component approach.
  • No Electron or Chromium: No heavyweight browser under the hood, clogged RAM or rendering delays.
  • GPU acceleration out of the box: The entire UI is drawn directly through the graphics card at near-native speed.
  • Cross-platform: You can build ultra-fast desktop applications using a familiar codebase.

An excellent alternative for anyone tired of Electron’s overhead but unwilling to give up the React ecosystem for desktop development.

What do you think of removing Chromium from desktop React applications? Are you ready to try GPU renderers like these for your projects, or is Electron still working for you?
