GPU Time: parsing dates with AI ⏱️🧠
gpu-time is a roughly 24.8K-parameter micromodel for locally parsing dates and relative time expressions.

Why send textual date queries to gigantic LLMs (or run heavy regex workarounds) when a microscopic neural network can handle relative time expressions like “next Tuesday at 5pm” or “in 3 hours”?
Arik Chakma has released gpu-time, an ultra-lightweight neural network model with just ~24.8K parameters, designed specifically for local date and time parsing.
Why this is interesting:
- Size The model weighs just a few kilobytes and requires minimal resources. You can run it locally right on the client or in Serverless/Edge functions without delays or token charges.
- An alternative to LLM requests It replaces heavy calls to third-party APIs when you only need to extract a date from user input.
- Robustness with natural language Unlike rigid regular expressions, the model understands context, typos and relative time constructions reasonably well.
An excellent solution for CLI tools, task managers and input forms where you want a smart UX without the overhead of cloud AI.
What do you think of micromodels for narrow tasks? It seems we’ll be seeing more and more of this soon. Any ideas about what we could hand over to AI on the web?
